AI Apprenticeship

Three Years Unpaid

From late 2022, built phone systems, websites, and database setups for friends with no invoices. Needed to know what breaks at 2am when a real customer calls a real business before charging a stranger.

The Path Here

Business operator first. Always.

Most people in AI consulting came at it from the technology side. They read the papers. Watched the demos. Learned the frameworks. Then went looking for businesses to apply them to.

Joe came the other way. He had to.

He started on a sales floor while in college, selling $12k a week (in 2010 dollars) in suits as an assistant manager at Men's Wearhouse and leading the region twice before he turned 22. He learned the close. He learned the psychology of the sale. Then, he spent three years at a local payroll company running over five hundred client accounts in the tax department while finishing his Villanova degree at night. He learned that the work that holds a business together is rarely the work the owner sees.

After he graduated college, he walked five hundred miles across Spain on the Camino de Santiago. A truly amazing experience that taught him about grit, consistency, and always putting one foot in front of the other.

From 2017 to 2020 he ran three $4M+/yr restaurant locations. Over 80 employees at each location, learning how to manage pasta, pizza, people, and P&Ls.

During the pandemic, he mentored over 300 professionals from around the world under David Perell at Write of Passage. He founded his own course called Unparalleled Live and taught seventy-five students courage to publish their writing, website design, SEO, and personal storytelling. He published every day for one hundred days, twice. In parallel, he taught math, writing, economics, and history to high schoolers for a year. He worked at a business consulting/M&A firm, building a mastermind group for business owners from scratch and sitting in on M&A deal rooms with one of the country’s most respected business minds.

In 2024 he passed the SIE, the Series 7, the Series 63, the Series 65, and the Pennsylvania Life and Health insurance license. All five exams. Ten weeks.

The common thread across all of it was watching real businesses leak real money to systems that "almost" worked. "Almost" answered the phone every time. "Almost" followed up quickly. "Almost" asked for reviews consistently. Every business had the same pattern of problems.

In late 2022, when ChatGPT went public, Joe was already heads-down in it. For three years, with no invoices, he built phone systems, websites, and database setups for friends. He wanted to know what breaks at 2am when a real customer calls a real business. He needed to know the intricacies of AI before he charged a stranger.

When AI became powerful enough to fix the leaks he had been watching for a decade, he did not need to learn the businesses. He already knew them. He had already learned the tools. So he put them all together.

In December of 2025 he made it official. He launched IronBridge Automation, an AI-powered business consultancy focusing on small to medium-sized businesses, because he identified a large and widening gap: large firms have been building AI for years while the small local businesses have just been treading water. IronBridge now exists to BRIDGE the Gap.
